With hygiene education communities can improve their health by adopting simple behaviors such as hand washing and safe water storage.

In Malawi, young children defecate openly leading to water contamination and increased incidences of diarrhea. To address this issue children receive a child-size latrine "arbor-loos" that allows them to defecate safely and hygienically.

In rural West Bengal, India the lack of water and sanitation facilities in educational institutions is alarming. A school of 1,000 students will commonly have one tubewell for drinking water and sanitation facilities that are highly over burdened or nonexistent.
