Boys & Girls Club of Baton Rouge Katrina Relief
WhatProject Needs and BeneficiariesOf the more than 1 million people displaced by Hurricane Katrina, some 300,000 are children. After the storm, Boys & Girls Club moved quickly to assist children who were forced from their homes. We provide a safe place for kids to recover from the traumatic events, a place to learn, play and make new friends. Currently, there are about 500 displaced kids participating in the programs that will run throughout this school year and next summer. ActivitiesBoys & Girls Club provides after school programs at Scotlandville Middle School and weekend activities at FEMA trailer parks. We are working with other local agencies to assist in the recovery of children and families affected by the storm. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge has been very busy improving the lives of children in our community. This past summer, we operated nine summer enrichment sites serving more than 500 youth from 1st to 9th grade. Studies show that without enrichment during the summer months, students experience summer learning loss. Math, Science, and Reading were the main focus; however, we did incorporate arts and other life lessons into their learning experience. For example, dance, visual arts, drama classes, nutrition classes, fire/home safety, and abstinence classes, just to name a few. |
